Serie A resumes after Morosini tragedy

All games were postponed following Italian Serie B player Piermario Morosini’s collapse and subsequent death on the pitch last weekend. Though no football, Serie A has remained busy over the last week, with the aftermath of his death alongside Udinese legend Antonio Di Natalie announcing he will be taking care of Morosini’s severely disabled daughter, providing a sizable silver lining to an otherwise tragic cloud that is hanging over Italian football.
Football resumes this week though, with arguably the biggest clash being Juventus hosting Roma. Juventus have won their last 5 games whilst Roma have enjoyed mixed form all season long, as Luis Enrique is quick to admit. They will however, provide certain dangers to the league leaders with Francesco Totti shaking off injury concerns but Juan, Marco Cassetti, Bogdan Bobont and Nicolas Burdisso all still out of action. Gabriel Heinze is likely to return to defence, to face former Roma star Vucinic, who never really found a footing at his former club. Juventus have a full squad to choose from, and are favourites for to continue their winning streak.

Milan can go top of the table for a brief time and pile the pressure on Juventus with a win against Bologna. Thiago Silva, Flavio Roma, Kevin Prince Boateng, Inzaghi, Ambrosini and Alexandre Pato are all still sidelined for the Rossoneri, but this is a much more manageable injury list than in recent weeks. Visitors Bologna managed to sneak a 1-0 win past Cagliari in their last match with an Alessandro Diamanti strike to take them away from the bottom three, but with Jose Crespo, Mikael Antonsson, Jean Francois Gillet, Rene Krhin and Federico Casarini all injured, it is looking unlikely they will repeat that feat at the San Siro.

The other half of Milan travel to Fiorentina and both sides still have reason to play at this late stage of the season. With a win over AC Milan, Fiorentina took a huge step to avoiding relegation, but goal scorer Amauri is suspended for this clash alongside Kroldrup, Vargas and Jovetic, leaving Fiorentina very short in their attacking options. Meanwhile, Inter are still undefeated under new manager Andrea Stramoccioni after beating Siena 2-1. They have conceded seven goals in three matches though in their late bid to gain Champions League football. Influential playmakerWesley Sneijder is back in training but Maicon and Castaignos are injured, with Walter Samuel suspended.

Rome based Lazio host in form Lecce, who are unbeaten in their last 5 including an impressive 4-2 demolition of Roma. For the home side, Klose and Cristian Brocchi are sidelined, the latter for the rest of the season. The visitors are surprisingly only six points away from the top half of Serie A, marking one of the closest survival run ins in recent memory. Both sides have a huge incentive to come out victorious in this clash. Elsewhere, Napoli are to host Novara, and the home side look to break their current slump in form to regain Champions League football, despite falling six points off the pace in recent weeks. They do, however, have an easy run in to the end of the season, with four of their opponents being strugglers in the division. Novara, on the other hand, probably have the toughest last few games of all the sides. Alongside star Marco Rigoni pulling out of training this week, they look set to continue to struggle to get results until the end of the season.

Chievo host Udinese, who still have a chance at Champions League football despite just one win in seven for the travelling side. The home side will look to silence Antonio Di Natale if they have any chance of success in this game with a hard working midfield and defence key to neutralising Udinese’s offensive prowess. There are also a host of mid table clashes, with Genoa desperate to avoid a relegation battle, but Siena, despite a 2-1 loss to Inter, have looked promising in recent weeks. A win for the travellers will see them break the magic 40 point barrier.

Parma face the Sardinian side Cagliari. Cagliari have recently become wary of the drop zone, as they sit just 4 points away from it with as many games to go. Parma will certainly have confidence, with two home wins against Lazio and Novara in recent weeks placing them in the top half of the table. They are, however, weakened by injuries to Jonathon Biabiany and McDonald Mariga. Catania and Atalanta go head to head, with both sides clear of the drop but also unable to make that final push for European football. Despite a strong 2012, Catania have suffered consecutive defeats to Chievo and Lecce in their last two outings. Top half for Atalanta would be a fantastic achievement considering their 6 point deduction, but they have been fantastically inconsistent this year.

Finally, strugglers Cesena face Palermo, with defeat for the home side all but confirming their relegation status. Palermo look to finish in the top 10 for a fourth consecutive season. Cesena will have to win five of their remaining fixtures to steer clear of the drop. Adrian Mutu scored in a victory for Cesena when the teams met earlier this season, but such an upset is unlikely this time around.
