Cagliari host Inter Milan - Serie A Weekend Preview

Inter Milan provided one of the games of the season last weekend with a 5-4 win against Genoa, but it hasn’t left manager Andrea Stramaccioni without some selection headaches this week against Cagliari. Influential pair Maicon and Wesley Sneijder are suffering from knee and groin injuries respectively, Luc Castaignos also misses the clash with a thigh problem. Julio Cesar is suspended after his red card last week; while Lucio is also suspended, meaning Luca Castellazzi will start in goal for the Nerazzurri. For Cagliari, Daniele Dessena is out for the remainder of the season and Rui Sampaio also unable to recover in time, but Davide Astori will return to Cagliari’s back line.

Elsewhere, Palermo host unbeaten side Juventus in Sicily this weekend. Palermo are injury and suspension strickened, with Andrea Mantovani, Nicolas Bertolo, Massimo Donati and Abel Hernandez all suspended, with Federico Balzaretti and Matias Silvestre both injured. This will mean a young and inexperienced side will feature for Palermo, marking the injury and suspension free Juventus as clear favourite. The big change being Alessandro Matri potentially returning and a reversion to the 4-3-3 formation rather than the 3-5-2 used in recent weeks.

The late kick-off in the league sees Lazio face off against Napoli. Napoli have a woeful away form in Serie A this season, whilst Lazio have been strong at home. However, both sides have been leaking goals and have relatively poor form for as they both fight for the final Champions League place. Cristian Brocchi, Andre Dias, Miroslav Klose, Marius Stankevicius, Matuzalem, Stefan Radu and Senad Lulic all miss the game for Lazio, and Napoli’s list of injuries and suspensions reads almost as bad, with Andrea Dossena, Marco Donadel, Christian Maggio, Juan Zuniga and Walter Gargano all missing the fixture. Expect lots of goals in an unpredictable fixture, as both sides try to react to recent poor form.

League leaders AC Milan will hope to bounce back from defeat at the Nou Camp with a win against Fiorentina. Alberto Aquilani, Sulley Muntari and Urby Emanuelson look set to feature in midfield, with only goal scorer Nocerino keeping his place from the midfield who played Barcelona. Thiago Silva, Mark van Bommel, Filippo Inzaghi, Rodney Strasser, Flavio Roma, Mathieu Flamini and Alexandre Pato all miss the clash, with the latter being out for the remainder of the season. Delio Rossi, the Fiorentina coach has come under criticism recently because of his side’s remarkable fall down the table and with Amauri a doubt, alongside Riccardo Montolivo’s suspension, they will have to try turn around their fortunes without two of their most influential players.

Meanwhile, Atalanta face off against Siena. Siena haven’t lost in their last two away fixtures, but have only registered one away win against Cesena this season. Mattia Destro has scored seven this season, and any hope of a result for the side will most likely come through him. Atalanta’s eight-game unbeaten run ended last weekend against Cagliari, but the side are favourites to return to winning ways. Cesena play against Bologna, who have won four of their last five meetings against their opponents, but Cesena are on a 12-game winless streak in Serie A and have failed to score in six of their last seven. Bologna are also in poor form, losing their two last games. Without Adrian Mutu, Cesena have picked up just two points in six games and scored just once and are unlikely to return to any form in this fixture.

Chievo host Catania, and the home side are unbeaten in their last six fixtures against Catania, with Sergio Pellissier netting four times in those encounters. After Chievo’s win against Fiorentina, they are looking to capitalise and surge up the table before the close of the season. Finally, relegation threatened Lecce will have Champions League hopefuls Roma to compete with. Lecce have been successful just once against the team from the capital, that win coming in 1986. Lecce are on a run of three draws, but Roma have only drawn five times in the league, and the bookmakers widely expect an away win in this encounter.
