Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has today revealed that because of the hectic fixture schedule that the club are facing, he will now be forced to call on back up squad players in order to field a team against Premier League leaders Manchester City when they meet in the Carling Cup tomorrow.
In a question and answer session with the press today, Wenger revealed that players such as captain Robin Van Persie, Theo Walcott and midfielder Aaron Ramsey are currently feeling jaded from their recent schedule and that means that he will be forced to replace them for the game tomorrow night.
Although the loss of such players would be seen to be key to the North London club as they get ready to battle with the club that have already beaten reigning champions Manchester United 6-1 earlier in the season, Wenger showed that he has the belief that players such as Yossi Benayoun, Park Chu-Young and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be able to raise to the occasion and produce a solid performance for the club.
Many have opened discussions over whether Wenger will result to selecting a side that would allow the Premier League leaders to advance into the next round of the competition with ease but the Frenchman revealed “I will rest some players, but I still want to play a team that has a chance to win the game”.
The Arsenal boss tipped former Chelsea midfielder Benayoun to produce a firm performance tomorrow night, saying that the player has only been left on the sidelines as he can only play three midfielders at any time due to his formation and believes that he will take this opportunity to shine and demand a first eleven starting place.
Although there seems to be more midfielders in the squad than possible placements within the squad, Wenger pointed out that the competition for places is good for the team and helps to keep players motivated to play well, saying that “everybody helps focus the team to win”.
