Oh and the plot thickens. We wrote just a few days back about how Manchester City had won a big game against Liverpool to distance themselves from their biggest opponent right now, Manchester United. To break down exactly how important that win for Manchester City was, the football news today makes it pretty simple to understand. Manchester United went down yesterday, and took a huge step back after being beaten 3-0 by a very solid Newcastle team. United seems to be struggling a bit lately, as they have now suffered back to back losses to Blackburn and now Newcastle, and find themselves three points behind City.

It started just a bit before halftime, as Newcastle’s leading scorer Demba Ba netted his 15th goal to give the team a 1-0 lead. A 30 yard free kick in the 47th minute by Yohan Cabaye gave them a 2-0 lead, and made the comeback a bit more of a task even for a star-studded roster like Manchester United. The goal that finished it off came in stoppage time when Phil Jones put in an own goal. United had a few chances themselves though, which is understandable of course as a team like that is tough to contain for too long; but Newcastle did more than enough when all was said and done. Dimitar Berbatov had a header that hit the post, and Wayne Rooney had a tough shot blocked as well.

This leaves Manchester City at the top with 48 points, and a +40 goal differential, and Manchester United with 45 points, but a +29 goal differential. That goal differential could be a big issue for United, but only time will really tell on that matter. United finds themselves in the football news quite often, but what is very interesting about this two game losing streak for the team is that this is the first time that they have given up three goals in back to back games since back in 2004. Another interesting story to keep an eye on here though? How about the fact that there is a team in Tottenham who is right on Manchester United’s back now, and seems completely prepared to get to the next level.

Regardless of all of the football news swirling around currently, the home stretch of the Barclay’s Premier League this season should be a fun one, so keep your eye on Manchester City, Manchester United, and even Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle to see if one of these clubs can push into the top three of four of the league.
