Edin Dzeko is set to commit his long-term future to Manchester City by signing a new contract at the Etihad Stadium. The Bosnian frontman signed for the Premier League champions from Wolfsburg in a £27 million deal in 2011, going on to establish himself as a key part of City success over the past three years. Despite often finding himself down the pecking order under Roberto Mancini and now Manuel Pellegrini, Dzeko has consistently scored goals during his time at the club, scoring 46 goals in 109 Premier League appearances.

While Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo were Pellegrini’s first choice front-pairing last season, Dzeko still managed to finish the campaign with 26 goals in all competitions – the first time he’d passed the 20-goal barrier since his arrival in England. The 28-year old followed that up by playing a part in Bosnia’s debut World Cup campaign, scoring a goal in his country’s 3-1 victory over Iran.

Dzeko played a key role in the defending champions kicking off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle, laying on his David Silva to score his side’s opening goal. After an impressive end to last season, Dzeko’s performance against Newcastle saw him receive plenty of praise from his manager.

“He finished last season playing very well and was one of the best players in this game. He worked hard and won a lot of aerial duels. It was a complete game from him.”

“I’m very happy for him. That’s why he is renewing his contract here – he has a very important duty in our team. But I repeat, Edin finished last season playing the same way as he has started.”
There has been plenty of speculation linking Dzeko with moves away from the Etihad in recent years, with more than a few Premier League clubs keen on signing a striker who has consistently scored goals wherever he has played. While it remains to be seen whether or not the Bosnian will find himself behind Negredo and Aguero this season, City fans will be delighted that the forward has seen fit to commit his long-term future to the club.

Another striker looking for a more important role this season will be Stevan Jovetic. The Montenegro international had an injury-hit debut season in the Premier League, managing just 16 appearances in all competitions last season and scoring six goals. The former Fiorentina forward arrived at the Etihad for a deal in the region of £22 million and City fans will be hoping to see Jovetic repay some of that fee with an improved campaign this year.

While City may not have been able to flex their financial muscles as much as they would have wanted in this summer’s transfer window due to the Financial Fair Play Rules, Pellegrini has still been able to add six quality players to his squad in the shape of Eliaquim Mangala, Bruno Zuculini, Frank Lampard, Willy Caballero, Fernando and Bacary Sagna – and it’s no surprise to see so many bet365 fans tipping City to retain their Premier League crown.
