Brendan Rodgers has insisted “Brazilian-style” Daniel Sturridge has all the ability to become England’s number one striker.

Sturridge has picked up where he left off at the end of last season, scoring winners in each of Liverpool’s first two Premier League games to continue the hot streak that began with six goals in five matches at the end of last season.

But while Rodgers has admitted he has been very impressed by his striker’s early-season form, the Northern Irishman reckons there is more to come from a player still capped just six times by his country.

“If you look at Daniel Sturridge and what he has, as long as he continues and keeps his fitness, he would be a big threat for any team. You’d look at him and people would think he’d maybe be a Brazilian striker with his body physique and his pace and power.”

“England are fortunate to have him because he’s a big talent but he knows he needs to be consistent, he needs to get himself the games and the goals. I have got no doubt, though, that he will be a massive asset for England,” insisted the Liverpool manager.

It remains to be seen what kind of Luis Suarez returns to action, if at all, but Liverpool will know that Sturridge could well be crucial to the club’s hopes this season. The youngster has looked as impressive as anyone in the Premier League so far this season, but the question will be whether Sturridge can maintain this level of performance throughout a full season.

But there are certainly plenty of positives for England fans and people gambling on bet to take from seeing how Sturridge has begun the new season.
