Barcelona club president Sandro Rosell has updated the media on the progress of Barcelona and French international defender Eric Abidal. Though no official statement has been made, at the request of his family, Rosell has said that “Both Abidal and his cousin (who donated the liver) are progressing well. We cannot give any more information due to the express wishes of the family.”

As his side played Getafe at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening, Eric was under the operating table. The fans and players alike paid tribute to the 32 year old during the 4-0 win. Manager Pep Guardiola said “We want to dedicate this win to Abidal and his cousin Gerard. It’s a special day because we knew that today he underwent his operation. We’ve been told that Abidal’s operation has finished, which has been long and we need to be patient. Throughout the week we will know more. The next few days will be key to see how things are going. We have a lot of faith in someone as strong as him.”

His surgery was announced a month ago, almost a year after the defender had surgery to remove a tumour in his liver. He was out for just seven weeks after that operation in March 2011, showing outstanding resilience to return to his previous health and even more remarkably, form after such a stressful operation. All fans of the game will remember his lifting of the Champions League trophy after victory over Manchester United as one of the most touching moments in recent football history.

As Barcelona close Madrid’s lead in La Liga, players were quick to prioritise Eric, with Spain international Andres Iniesta among many Barcelona players dedicating their win to him, adding “I’m happy to dedicate this win to Abi. This is for you!”
