Benteke miss World Cup!

Christian Benteke has dealt a blow to both Aston Villa and Belgium following the news the striker will be sidelined for six months after rupturing his Achilles tendon in training. As well as being ruled out of the rest of Villa’s Premier League campaign this season, Benteke’s injury means he will also miss this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The 23-year old has struggled with injury throughout this season, but the striker has still managed to weigh in with 11 goals and further establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting young goalscorers. While the injury may be a blow to Villa this season, it may ultimately help them in their bid to hang on to a striker that many clubs in the Premier League are interested in signing.

Belgium’s talent-packed squad has seen a number of Betfair visitors back them to be dark horses at this summer’s World Cup. With a strike-force of Benteke and Everton forward Romelu Lukaku, the small European nation had been tipped with Betfair to be one of the highest scorers at this summer’s tournament, although Belgium will now have to plan for life without the Premier League star.

Villa manager Paul Lambert confirmed Benteke would now miss the World Cup as well as the rest of this season after suffering the injury.

“It’s a terrible blow both for Christian and for the club. He will miss the rest of the season, obviously, and also the World Cup. But he’ll work hard because that’s what he does and he’ll come back for us stronger than ever next season.”

It remains to be seen how Benteke’s absence will impact Belgium’s plans this summer, but Vincent Kompany’s men will still head to Brazil confident they have the attacking options to cover for the loss of the Villa player. But it’d take an optimistic Belgium fan to maintain their side are the same attacking threat as they are with Benteke in.
